It takes 20-years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently. – Warren Buffet

One of our long-term customers, a global manufacturer of fiberglass components, approached us with an opportunity to support them with a solution to provide a precise cut on fiberglass. Because the fiberglass being cut was exceptionally fine and easily frayed, the blade had to maintain a sharp edge and provide a clean cut over time.

The goal was to provide our valued partner with a solution that would help them accomplish their production and maintenance goals without using an expensive material that would drive up blade costs. American Cutting Edge was able to find a blade to meet their requirements made out of tool steel and with the help of our industrial knife engineers, we were able to produce the blades at a far more reasonable cost than competitive options.

The ability to maintain a sharp cutting edge was extremely important to our customer since blade change outs can take a significant amount of timefiber blades – up to two to three hours to load each cutter head. Our engineering department was able to come up with a very specific and simplified grind that helped maintain the quality of the cut. The end result was a reduction the labor required to grind the blades. Without the extra grinds in the process, the blade was less expensive to produce, provided a higher quality and longer lasting edge, and ultimately because less expensive to produce.

If you are not taking care of your customers, your competitor will.” – Bob Hooey

Further adding to the reduction of costs were a number of supply chain management solutions that immediately drove costs down by 3-5%. Over time, pre-sourcing raw materials and planning ahead for the product quantities needed via blanket orders contributed to the savings achieved with the higher quality cut. Cost savings over the course of six years were around 15%. Having the supply inventory of blades on-hand allows them to pre-build their cutter heads, increase the number of lines they’re running from four or five to 18 and have a significant positive impact on production.

All of your customers are partners in your mission. – Shep Hyken
